A Spiritual Perspective on Thyroid Disorder

The thyroid is a small, butterfly shaped gland located at the front of your neck. It is part of your endocrine system and controls many of your body’s functions by producing and secreting hormones. The medical perspective of the thyroid says the thyroid’s main job is to control the speed of your metabolic rate. Every cell in your body needs energy to function and metabolism is the process of how your body transforms food into energy.

Spiritually and energetically, the thyroid is linked to the throat chakra, the area of self-expression and personal power. Louise L. Hay identified three main emotions that the thyroid rules. Those emotions are;

-Humiliation
-I never get to do what I want to do
-When is it my turn?

Thyroid dis ease is something more often found in women, as our true needs, feelings, rights, and feminine power have been dismissed for thousands of years. One of the main emotions of the neck area is grief. Our western society does not have proper ways of feeling, processing, and healing grief. Many of us have suppressed grief from our childhoods and have had great difficulty acknowledging deep sadness and underlying grief. We are typically told “I’m sorry to hear that” or “don’t cry.” We have been told to “do the work” and “deal with your past”, but often not shown how.

When we cannot heal, the dis or lack of ease turns into a physical issue. This is the body’s way of getting our attention so that we can find a resolution to come back into balance, also called homeostasis. If you have had some kind of issue relating to the thyroid or not being able to express yourself and not found a way to heal, you will often present with a physical diagnosis.

Women with unhealed thyroid issues often end up with polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis, autoimmune disorders, infertility, menstrual and menopausal issues. Men with thyroid issues present with hair loss, low sex drive, low sperm count and lowered testosterone. Both men and women with thyroid issues will have repressed anger and rage. These emotions are often shunned by society and deemed unacceptable, making the healing process confusing and difficult.

Every holistic therapy has some method or technique to heal thyroid dis orders. It is my hope that through expanding the perspective of how these physical dis eases occur, people will take more control of his or her path of healing and add alternative healing to the solution of physical, mental, and emotional dis ease.

Love,
